Student Leadership Awards
Each year, UNC Asheville recognizes those students and student organizations that have excelled in their contributions to the University community. Strong student leadership at UNC Asheville is marked by a balance between the rigors of academic life and the citizenship of co-curricular and community involvement. Nominations may be made by any member of the University community (students, faculty, staff, and alumni). Below are each of the award categories and descriptions for the 2011 Student Leadership Awards.
Carolyn Briggs Diversity Award
Description: In order to foster human dignity through acts of civility and respect we must understand one another, or at the least, seek to. Through outstanding efforts to increase diversity awareness and intercultural understanding, student organizations and individuals contribute to the betterment of the university environment as a whole. This award will be presented to the student organization and/or student who has excelled in the promotion of diversity in the university community.
Nomination: Explain how the student or student organization best exemplifies this distinction through his/her efforts to increase awareness and intercultural understanding.
Collaboration of the Year Award
Description: The Collaboration of the Year award is designed to recognize the best collaborative effort as evidenced by partner relationships, teamwork, and outcomes achieved. This award is a testimony that the collective whole can yield the greatest results, touch more lives, and help more people. This award will be presented to the student organization(s) that demonstrate a successful collaboration.
Nomination: Describe how the student organization(s) created a solid collaboration through developed relationships, teamwork, and successfully achieving goals collectively. Elaborate on a specific project which demonstrates the successful collaboration and its impact on the University or Asheville community.
Community Connections of the Year Award
Description: Student Organizations do more than simply host programs and events; they benefit their communities. This award will be presented to the student organization that has distinguished itself through efforts to improve UNC Asheville and the Asheville area through community connections within Asheville. This award will recognize the organization that has created a strong community connection and provided a significant community benefit.
Nomination: Describe how this organization has distinguished itself through its community connections, specifically in the areas of leadership, community need, community benefit, creativity, and impact.
Champion for Students Award
Description: Student organization and student leaders are regularly supported by staff and faculty who take a genuine interest in their growth and development. This award will be presented to that staff or faculty member who empowers students, displays commitment to student development, and has a positive impact on the student community.
Nomination: Describe how this person has taken an active role in the growth and development of student leaders and/or organizations and has made a positive impact on students and/or student organizations. Nominations must be made by students.
Innovative Program of the Year Award
Description: This award is offered to honor excellence in the development of an original educational or social program/activity that has benefitted the University and/or community. This award will be presented to the student organization that has implemented the most innovative program created during the 2010-2011 academic year.
Nomination: Describe how this creative and original program benefitted the University and/or community, included successful promotion/publicity, encouraged organizational participation and group effort, and utilized effective pre-planning and implementation.
Outstanding Community Service Award
Description: Embracing both the University community as well as the local Asheville community through involvement and service is a priority to many students. Through commitment to enhancing our community via acts of service, students engage in hands-on learning, meet needs, and find personal fulfillment. This award will be presented to a student who demonstrates service to the community and encourages students to provide leadership and service that fosters community growth.
Nomination: Describe specific examples of the individual’s community involvement and how he/she has inspired others to more actively perform community service, the individual’s leadership demonstrated through effective use of political or social networking skills to promote the importance and benefits of community service, and his/her commitment to the promotion of community service.
Outstanding Emerging Leader Award
Description: This award will be presented to a freshman or a sophomore who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership at UNC Asheville. This student consistently motivates and encourages others. The Outstanding Emerging Leader provides vision for students and leads by example. This person challenges fellow students to do their best. This person should be an effective communicator and a positive role model.
Nomination: Describe how this person has taken an active part in leadership at UNC Asheville, how he/she has made a positive impact in the University community, and his/her potential for future impact at UNC Asheville.
Outstanding Leader Award
Description: This award will be presented to a junior or a senior who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership at UNC Asheville. This student consistently motivates and encourages others. The Outstanding Leader provides vision and leads by example. This person challenges fellow students to do their best. This person should be an effective communicator and a positive role model.
Nomination: Describe how this person has taken an active part in leadership at UNC Asheville, how he/she has made a positive impact in the University community, and the future impact this student may have as a leader in his/her community.
Outstanding Program of the Year Award
Description: This award will be presented to the student organization that has implemented the most outstanding campus program that benefitted the University and/or community. Outstanding programs include programs that contribute to the development of a diverse culture on campus and appeal to a varied audience.
Nomination: Describe how this program benefitted the University and/or community, included successful promotion/publicity, encouraged organizational participation and group effort, and utilized effective pre-planning and implementation.
Outstanding Student Organization Award
Description: This award will be given to the student organization that has contributed the most to the growth and development of the University community. This award will be presented to the student organization that continually provides strong educational programming. Educational programming is defined as that which relays information to the students on important or timely issues. The best programs are creative and effective in reaching target audiences.
Nomination: Describe the programs or events provided by the student organization during the 2010/11 academic year. Expand upon at least one of the programs by providing a description of the event which details the importance or timeliness of the issue. Include information explaining how this event was promoted and the number in attendance at the event.
Outstanding Student Organization President Award
Description: This award will be presented to the president who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership within a student organization. This student is consistently motivating and encouraging to others. The Outstanding Student Organization President provides vision for the group and leads by example. This person challenges fellow members to do their best. This person should be an effective communicator and a positive role model.
Nomination: Describe how this person has taken an active role in the internal activities of the student organization and how he or she has made a positive impact on the organization overall.
Student Employee of the Year Award
Description: This award will be given to the student who consistently gives of his or her time and energy for the betterment of the organization. This student consistently goes above and beyond the expectations of the position duties and encourages fellow employees to be equally committed to a job well done.
Nomination: Describe how this person takes an active part in organization job duties and exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding employee as well as how this individual has made an impact in the organization.
